Si definiscono giochi “come se” quelle situazioni nelle quali le esigenze del contratto obbligano il dichiarante a giocare in un certo modo e soltanto in quello perché, pur avendo poche probabilità di rispondere alla reale posizione delle carte, è comunque l’unico che può consentire il successo.

Il nome deriva dal fatto che, quando l’operazione riesce, il dichiarante dà la sensazione di aver giocato “come se” conoscesse le carte degli avversari.

Per esempio nella seguente distribuzione di un colore:

Se Sud deve necessariamente fare tutte le prese perché gli avversari hanno già realizzato quelle di loro competenza rispetto al contratto, è evidente che Sud non ha altra scelta se non quella di battere Asso e Re sperando che uno degli avversari abbia Donna e Fante senza altre carte.

Si tratta, invece, di un caso nel quale si impone il gioco “come se” non solo perché è l’unico suscettibile di garantire il numero desiderato di prese ma anche perché non comporta alcun rischio di cederne di più.

Nella seguente distribuzione di un colore:

Se Est passa il Dieci si copre di Fante per l’onore di ovest e, battendo l’Asso al secondo giro, si fa cadere l’altro onore perdendo una sola presa; se Est passa il suo Re o la sua Donna, Sud al secondo giro gioca il Fante dalla mano e, facendo il sorpasso all’onore di Ovest, libera tutte le altre prese.

Un’altra situazione che è bene porre in evidenza, anche se di più facile soluzione, è la seguente:
